The Queen's Award
Weir Minerals Europe has been honoured with
the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.
The award was announced in April, when
managing director Kevin Spencer attended a special event announcing
this year’s winners in London.
In July, Kevin, along with Nigel alHHalstead,
Todmorden’s night shift manager with 42 years service, attended a
reception for this year’s 78 winners given by The Queen and Prince
Philip at Buckingham Palace.
Also in July, the Lord Lieutenant for West
Yorkshire Dr Ingrid Roscoe presented the crystal award to Kevin at
a special luncheon for staff and invited guests at the plant.
Weir Group Chief Executive Mark Selway also
presented the Most Improved Facility Award which had been made to
the plant earlier in the year. The celebrations were
completed with a family open day.
The Weir Minerals business at Todmorden in
West Yorkshire has operated on the same site since
1893.
It became part of Warman in 1976 and finally
part of the Weir Group in 1999.
Weir Minerals Europe exports to over 50
countries with offices in 11 countries. The company employs
426 people world wide with 380 based in Todmorden. Over the
past five years there has been considerable investment in the
development of the production facility in terms of equipment and
people, including the implementation of the Weir Production System
reflecting Lean manufacturing techniques. Training programmes
and implementation of best practice across the world ensure
continued improvements in both quality and efficiency.
Kevin Spencer summarised the achievement
over recent years: “This award is in recognition of the
work put in by all employees both in Todmorden and overseas as well
as our suppliers and others connected with the company. There
have been a number of changes over the past five years to get us
where we are today and our employees have taken these on board and
supported us throughout.” .
