Weir Group chairman appointed to House of Lords
Sir Robert Smith, chairman of The Weir Group
PLC was introduced as a cross-bench peer in the House of Lords on
Monday 14 July 2008 with the title The Lord Smith of Kelvin.
The new Lord Smith is one of three new non-political peers
appointed earlier this year following recommendation from the House
of Lords Appointments Commission
His sponsors for the ceremony included Weir
Group non-executive director Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, former
Secretary General of NATO.
Lord Smith said: “I am delighted and
honoured to be appointed to the House of Lords. I have
been very fortunate to be involved in education, the arts and sport
as well as the world of business and finance and I intend to play
an active role in these and other areas within the House.”
He added: “This will complement my other
commitments, and I am looking forward to continuing to work with
the team at Weir, as well as with Scottish and Southern Energy and
Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.”
The selection of Kelvin for his title is to celebrate his
birthplace of Glasgow, as his family lived close to the River
Kelvin.
